Professional Practice:
Gregg Haggquist has been an oil and gas trader and business developer in U.S. and global markets for over thirty years. His most recent assignments have included establishing new businesses in natural gas marketing and upstream production in the U.S, for Sumitomo Corporation on Japan. He has also been Costco Wholesale’s advisor for gasoline in the U.S. Mainland and Hawaii. He has been retained by the California Energy Commission to study and report on such matters as: constructing a strategic reserve for gasoline in the state, exploring and reporting on market power issues, and establishing a forward petroleum market for California. Mr. Haggquist has also conducted market studies and held public workshops for the State of Hawaii and the Federal Energy Information Agency. He founded an oil trading and business development operation in Mainland China from 1997 to 2000, and has dealt very extensively with Japan, Korea and Taiwan over the years in their respective oil markets. Gregg was the Founder and President of a highly active and widely recognized energy trading company in the U.S., MIECO Inc., for over sixteen years, and developed Asia business opportunities for its parent Marubeni of Japan. MIECO actively participated in international cargo trade, domestic U.S. pipeline trading, the blending and distribution of distillates, marketing, terminal and pipeline operations, oil & gas exploration, and production and financial trading and risk management. In the early eighties Mr. Haggquist was co-founder and head trader for Pilot Petroleum, a California based oil trading firm that grew within two years from a start-up operation to the most dominant petroleum trading company on the US West Coast and throughout the Pacific Rim. Prior to developing the Pilot operation, he was head trader and U.S. West Coast General Manager for British Petroleum of North America. Gregg’s first nine years in the business were spent with Texaco learning the internal workings of a major oil company. He earned his undergraduate and advanced degree at night while working full time at Texaco. Gregg founded Monterey Global Energy (MGE Co. Ltd) in April 2000 as a consulting and business development firm serving diverse sectors of the Industry.
Professional and Civic Activities:
· Speaker at various oil industry conferences, addressing petroleum supply, demand and trading topics.
· Participant and speaker at public workshops for California Energy Commission
· Teacher of classes in American business practices in the oil industry for delegations from Mainland China's government-run company SINOPEC.
Education:
Mr. Haggquist was trained in Chinese Mandarin at the US Defense Language Institute, accredited with awards and distinctions. He served with the U.S. Special Forces in Asia in logistics and intelligence. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Comparative Literature from California State University and completed all courses toward a Masters degree in those disciplines before entering the time-demanding world of petroleum trading. He is a writer of professional papers, government reports, fiction and poetry.
